We have found that stress is a natural component of police work and some stressors in police work are particularly destructive

List and define three areas of stress that affect police officers and explain how these stressors impact the officers' lives.

Frustration, long hours personal issues, family life, macho attitude, danger, traumatic events, moral dilemmas, boredom. Exercise, humor, meditation, abdominal breathing, biofeedback, self-hypnosis, guided imaging, induced relaxation, subliminal conditioning, music, prayer, and diet have all been cited as useful techniques for stress reduction. Devices to measure stress levels are available in the form of hand-held heart rate monitors, blood pressure devices, "biodots" (which change color according to the amount of blood flow in the extremities), and psychological inventories. A new approach to managing stress among police officers holds that the amount of stress that officers experience is directlyrelated to their reactions to potentially stressful situations.
