What are "mismating" shots?

Mismating shots are estrogen compounds. Large doses of estrogen cause the uterine tubes to obstruct passage of the egg to the uterus. Mismating shots may fail because the injection must be given after ovulation but before the ova reach the uterus. This is difficult to time correctly in most dogs.
