The five-step engineering design process includes Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, and Improve. The first step, Ask, involves identifying the problem and understanding how other people have approached it. The second step, Imagine, requires brainstorming solutions and choosing one to pursue. In the Planning step, children draw a diagram and create material lists for their solution. Create means to make the solution as planned and then test it. In the Improve stage, children review what worked and what didn’t and consider ways to improve the design. This process fosters skills such as critical thinking, cooperative learning, communication, taking on challenges, and problem-solving, all of which help support cognitive development and further exploration in STEM subjects.
