Identify several characteristics that are common in the work of Shepard Fairey. How does Fairey use the elements of design to create works that blend art and design? Be sure to discuss a work of his in your response.

What will be an ideal response?

Fairey cherishes the intersection of art and design, believing it to be a big reason for his success. He works in a boldly graphic style, with images dominated by large, flat areas of red, black, light blue, and tan. He does not use hatching to model his forms. Instead, flat colors placed side by side suggest shading. His compositions are symmetrical, and all design rests on the surface of the page. Typography always enjoys a prominent role in his images, too, frequently shaping the meaning of the work.
