Discuss the causes of autism, and provide an historical perspective on causes
What will be an ideal response?
It is hard to imagine, but it was historically believed that autism was caused by parental behavior, particularly by that of mothers who were considered to be "cold" and "unresponsive" (the so-called "refrigerator mothers). However, by the 1970s it was established that brain or biochemical dysfunction occurring before, during, or after birth causes autism. Although it is known that autism is primarily biological in origin and that multiple biological factors are involved, the definitive cause is not known. Biological factors include genes (at least 10 have been identified as possibly contributing to autism), brain structure (the brains of children with autism often grow at an accelerated rate during the first few years), and neural pathways
