Compare the metabolic oxidation of proteins to the metabolic oxidation of carbohydrates in terms of efficiency and specificity.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers may vary. Both protein and carbohydrates are capable of being oxidized into ATP. When proteins are broken down they can enter the metabolic pool as amino acids. The amino acids can then enter the metabolic pathway at various points: pyruvate conversion, acetyl CoA conversion, and the citric acid cycle. When carbohydrates enter the metabolic pathway they will start at the glycolysis stage.
