Name and describe the three options for therapy for those who have had a laryngectomy
What will be an ideal response?
The first option is called an artificial larynx. This provides a source of vibration when placed on an individual's neck or in the mouth. The air in the vocal tract will vibrate and the articulators shape the vibrations into recognizable speech. Another option is esophageal speech. The patient uses the esophagus as the sound source for the voice. The patient is instructed to trap air with the tongue and capture this air at the top of the esophagus and creates a sound with a burp. The last option is tracheoesophageal puncture. This directs air from the trachea to the esophagus so that sound is produced in an easier and more efficient manner. The patient puts his finger over the stoma which forces air back through a special tube into the esophagus.
