Describe the trait model of leadership and discuss how it was believed that certain leadership traits correlated to leadership effectiveness.
What will be an ideal response?
The trait model of leadership focused on identifying the personal characteristics that cause effective leadership. Some of the characteristics are not personality traits per se but are concerned with a leader's skills, abilities, knowledge, and expertise. These characteristics include intelligence, knowledge and expertise, dominance, self-confidence, high energy, tolerance for stress, and integrity and honesty, and maturity. This perspective theorized that leaders who do not possess these traits may be ineffective. However, researchers determined that traits alone are not the key to understanding leader effectiveness. Some effective leaders do not possess all of the traits, and some leaders who possess the traits are not effective in their leadership roles. This lack of a consistent relationship between traits and effectiveness led researchers away from the trait model of leadership.
