Explain two classroom-based assessments that teacher may use to monitor students reading ability

What will be an ideal response?

Two classroom-based assessments that may be used to monitor students’ reading ability include: (i) Informal reading inventories (IRIs) typically contain a word-recognition inventory, oral reading passages, silent reading passages, and comprehension questions to accompany the passages. They help teacher determine students’ instructional, independent and frustration reading level. IRIs can also be used for analysis of errors to determine specific word analysis difficulties; (ii) Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) assesses a student’s reading progress by sampling his or her mastery of the actual curriculum. It focuses on the student’s ability to perform the specific skill stated in the accompanying behavioral objective. CBM also can help teachers monitor fluency, track oral reading miscues, and support for student self-monitoring of skills.
