What is the significance of an extant phylogenetic bracket?

What will be an ideal response?

An extant phylogenetic bracket allows us to make inferences about characteristics of extinct animals that do not fossilize, such as behavior and physiology. For example, because parental care is present in both crocodilians and birds we can infer that it was probably also present in the lineages bracketed by crocodilians and birds.
