What are the two types of diabetes mellitus and how do they differ?
What will be an ideal response?
The two types are type 1 diabetes, or insulin-dependent diabetes, and type 2 diabetes, or noninsulin-dependent diabetes. Type 1 diabetes develops before forty years of age and is caused by a decrease in one of the types of secretory cells in the islets of Langerhans, which results in a deficiency of insulin. Type 1 diabetes must be managed by daily injections of insulin. Type 2 diabetes develops in adulthood and is caused by a decrease in the number of insulin receptors on target cells, which reduces the ability of the cells to take up insulin and use it even though there may be enough insulin. This causes high levels of glucose in the blood. Type 2 can often be treated by diet management.
