The physician ordered a KUB (x-ray study of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder), complete blood count
(CBC), and complete metabolic profile.
Based on x-ray and laboratory findings, physical examination findings, and history, the physician diagnoses T.H. as having acute diverticulitis and discusses an outpatient
treatment plan with him.
What is diverticulitis? What are the consequences of untreated diverticulitis?
What will be an ideal response?
It is an inflammatory or infectious condition in and around the colon that develops when weak
areas of the intestinal wall protrude and create little outpouchings called diverticula. Bits of feces
caught in the diverticula can block the small neck of the diverticulum or can attract other debris
to form a fecalith. The fecalith exerts excess pressure on the relatively thin walls of the pouch,
causing inflammation and constriction of the blood supply to that area. If the diverticula perforate
and intervention is not initiated promptly, the patient will show signs and symptoms of localized
infection and eventually peritonitis.
