Why is it doubtful that anorexia nervosa is a result of depression or anxiety? What treatment approach is possible based on a different assumption?
What will be an ideal response?
Most people with anorexia nervosa showed no sign of depression or anxiety before developing anorexia. Also, treatments for depression are seldom effective in relieving anorexia. A different approach assumes that the loss of eating is primary, and that the heightened activity typical with anorexia is an attempt to keep warm. The treatment keeps the person warm and makes eating into something like a video game, so that the person feels a sense of control and accomplishment by eating properly.
