This breast lesion is best classified as
A. fibroadenoma
B. mucinous carcinoma
C. invasive ductal carcinoma
D. medullary carcinoma
E. fibrocystic change of the breast
C
This lesion is a scarlike desmoplastic invasive carcinoma. The microphotograph shows that the tumor is an adenocarcinoma and thus represents the most common form of breast cancer—an invasive ductal carcinoma. Mucinous carcinoma appears gelatinous, and the medullary carcinoma is bulky and solid and does not have such a scarlike appearance. The fibroadenoma is a sharply demarcated globular mass. Fibrocystic change does not produce scarlike lesions with the puckering of the overlying skin.
