Juliette is divorcing her husband, Jerry, of eleven years. Since their split and soon-to-be ultimate divorce, Jerry has lived in another state from Juliette and their ten year old daughter. The child support order is still to be determined. But Juliette is a little fearful that her daughter may not get the highest child support award available in her state. Juliette has been told by a friend who
has experienced a similar situation that she felt that the court totally gave her son the short end of the deal when it came to child support from his father. We know that federal law has mandated that every state must have in place child support guidelines. What can Juliette expect the court to follow as far as mandated guidelines are concerned? If the court decides not to follow the guidelines to the letter, explain under what circumstances the court may deviate from these guidelines.
