What are the most significant differences of DHCPv6 from earlier versions?

What will be an ideal response?

Apart from obvious differences in the length and format of the addresses themselves, DHCPv6 has some significant differences from earlier versions. Perhaps the most far reaching is that nodes under IPv6 can gain at least a locally functioning address without any help from DHCPv6. In effect, this means that all DHCPv6 clients are fully functioning hosts and able to search actively for the server using multicast solicitations. DHCPv6 clients can, for example, discover whether their DHCPv6 servers are on the local link. In addition, they can use a relay server on the local segment to receive configuration information from an off-link server. Another significant difference from DHCPv4 is that a DHCPv6 server does not supply the default gateway address to a host. A host derives that information from the RA.
