What are the two basic approaches to reading instruction? Define these. Morrison states his

research indicates that a balanced approach employing his individualized instruction plan is
most optimal.

Define both the balanced approach and Morrison's individualized instruction.
What was the major drawback to the success of his program?
What will be an ideal response?

Two basic approaches:
1. systematic and explicit phonics – children learn strategies for decoding and vocabulary; involves a
clear plan (1-1 letter/sounds) and clear instruction.
2. whole language – child is embedded in quality literature; learns phonetics on own; teacher
facilitates through corrective instruction. Balanced approach – incorporating elements of both plans –
letter/sound instruction and emphasis on quality materials. Morrison's individualized instruction 1.
assess individual child on decoding and vocabulary skills. 2. based on child's performance assign to
group where needed skills are taught or sustained silent reading can occur.
3. has developed a computer program for teachers which clearly states what types and how much time
individual children should spend on different literacy tasks.
4. major problem for success was fidelity of teacher to program. If teacher followed program, more
children were at grade-level. If teacher did not, then fewer children were at grade level.
