Define and explain the differences between slow wave potentials and pacemaker potentials in smooth muscle cells.

Slow wave potential describes the cyclic depolarization of smooth muscle cells that can lead to the generation of action potentials. When that depolarization is above threshold, action potentials are generated at a level consistent with the magnitude of that depolarization. For pacemaker potentials, some smooth muscle cells have oscillating membrane potentials that always reach threshold and generate an action potential. This causes the generation of a regular rhythm of action potentials within these cells.
