Describe the DRI and its four values: EAR, RDA, AI, and TUIL.
What will be an ideal response?
Responses will vary; the amounts of energy, nutrients, and other dietary components that best support health have been defined in the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) which offers four values. The Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) is the amount of a nutrient that seems to be sufficient to maintain a specific body function. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is the intake level that is recommended for most healthy people. The RDAs are considered generous so they will meet the needs of most people. Adequate Intakes (AIs) are values for nutrients that lack enough scientific evidence to determine an Estimated Average Requirement. The AI reflects the average amount of a nutrient that a group of healthy people consumes. Finally, the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (TUIL) is the level at which a nutrient is likely to become toxic. Upper levels are useful in guarding against the overconsumption of nutrients, which is most likely to occur when people use supplements or fortified foods regularly.
