Of the various things Emelia could do, what should take priority immediately? What can wait until later? What are criteria for making these decisions?
Emelia coordinated a Meals on Wheels Program for the elderly, and supervised 10 volunteers who delivered the meals. One day, when Emelia filled in for a volunteer and delivered a meal to the Snyders, she found Mr. Snyder very agitated and worried because Mrs. Snyder was missing. Apparently she had wandered off before. Because it was cold outside and they lived two blocks from a busy street, Emelia was alarmed and struggled with how to respond to this unexpected situation. As she tried to prioritize her responsibilities, she began to wonder if her volunteers were communicating with her and if they were well-trained for their responsibilities.
The safety of both Mr. and Mrs. Snyder is the highest priority at the moment. She should make sure that Mr. Snyder ate breakfast and is not in immediate need of food or insulin. After she has located Mrs.Snyder and made sure that Mr. and Mrs. Snyder are both safe, Emelia can go on to arrange a comprehensive assessment for each of them. Mr. Snyder¥s diabetes and Mrs. Snyder¥s new medication should be prioritized in the assessment. After these steps are taken, Emelia should schedule a case review with the team to develop a plan for long term care.
