Compare and contrast three different methods for staining neurons. Include what each stain is used for.

What will be an ideal response?

Golgi stains label entire neurons, allowing scientists to determine how neurons interact with each other and the spatial extent of neurons. Myelin stains label fibers of passage, showing where axons are located. Nissl stains label cell bodies, so these can be used to determine the density of cells in a brain area. Fluorogold labeling is one method for showing which neurons connect with each other because fluorogold can be injected into one neuron and is passed to connecting neurons. Autoradiography uses radioactive substances to label neurons that have been active during a task, so this can be used to identify specific neurons that were involved in a behavior. Immunocytochemistry uses dyes and antibodies that attach to various parts of a neuron to label that neuron. Immunocytochemistry can be used to identify which neurons contain certain components, such as certain neurotransmitters or cryptochromes.
