• Battered Child Syndrome (the collection of injuries sustained by a child as a result of repeated mistreatment or beating); Shaken Baby Syndrome (a form of child abuse that occurs when an abuser violently shakes an infant or small child, creating a whiplash-type motion that causes acceleration–deceleration injuries); Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (parents or caretakers attempt to bring medical attention to themselves by inducing illness in their children); Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (not the same as abuse, it is the diagnosis given for the sudden death of an infant one month to one year of age that remains unexplained after a complete investigation, which includes an autopsy, an examination of the death scene, and a review of the victim's medical and family history).
