Alec has had little experience in romantic relationships. In college, however, he has met people he is attracted to, but he is unsure how to communicate his interest nonverbally or how to discern if others are interested in him
What advice can you—and Albert Mehrabian—give Alec?
What will be an ideal response?
• Look for pleasure/liking cues: Forward body leans, head nods, direct eye contact and smiling, open body orientation, and expressive gestures and vocalics. It is most important that Alec express these in the earliest stages of the relationship (and to look for the behaviors in others). Speed dating participants who like their partners exhibit positive nonverbal immediacy behaviors such as maintaining eye contact, appearing relaxed and interested, smiling, and speaking in an engaging voice. The key is to pay attention to these behaviors.
• Look for arousal/interest cues: Changes in vocalic, kinesic, and proxemic cues. The voice typically rises in pitch and tempo increases. There are heightened dynamic gestures and excited or animated facial expressions. Proxemics may change, but are based on the "normal" patterns of the individual. Again, the key is to pay attention.
