Describe the characteristics of a situational judgment test and discuss the pros and cons of its use as a tool for employee selection.
What will be an ideal response?
• A situational judgment test presents job candidates with written or video-based scenarios that pose work-related dilemmas along with four or five possible courses of action that the candidates might take in response. The task is to identify the most effective action in each situation. Sometimes the test requires the test taker to identify both the most effective and least effective actions.
• A common scoring procedure is to develop an answer key based on the opinions of a group of subject matter experts regarding how effective each available choice is. The closer the correspondence between the test takers’ responses and the subject matter experts’ opinions, the higher the score.
• A situational judgment test is a measurement method, not a construct. The actual constructs being measured in any situational judgment test will depend on what the questions have been designed to measure.
• Research has shown that situational judgment tests can be valid predictors of job performance. They are less costly and easier to implement than other types of performance tests (such as assessment centers). But not all job related constructs can be easily measured by situational judgment tests. Examples would be communication skills, or composure under pressure.
