Ans: Normally, DNA synthesis in E. coli has a low rate of error. However, when there has been widespread DNA damage, such as that following UV irradiation, DNA polymerase III cannot always insert a complementary base at a damaged site during replication. However, there are alternate polymerases that can insert bases, though not always the one that is complementary to the original undamaged template base. This results in mutations. These alternate polymerases are DNA polymerases IV and V.
