C.P. tells you he doesn't want to live like this and that he would like to stop chemotherapy,

but his physician wants him to continue with aggressive therapy. Discuss what role you can
play in helping him.

What will be an ideal response?

Determine if C.P. and his wife have been given all of the information they need to make an informed
choice about his discontinuing therapy. If so, his wishes should be honored. If the physician cannot
accept this, C.P. should get another physician who will accommodate his wishes. If he does not have
advance directives, he and his wife need to discuss these, and they need to be referred for assistance
if desired. There is a possibility that he might be depressed; if the depression is treated, C.P. might
want continued supportive therapy. C.P. has the right to not suffer; he should be given the option of
receiving hospice care at home with optimal palliative support.
