Discuss how the anaphylotoxin complement fragments promote a better immune
response.
What will be an ideal response
The complement fragments that function as anaphylotoxins are C3a, C4a, and C5a. When they attach to
basophils/mast cells, the cells degranulate, releasing inflammatory mediators such as histamine. The inflammatory
mediators promote vascular permeability, smooth muscle contraction, release of lysosomal enzymes, and induction
of increased white blood cell metabolism (respiratory burst). This promotes the transfer of humoral immune
components and white blood cells to the affected area.
