What is the gender difference in the genital and psychological response to sexually explicit material? How is it explained?

What will be an ideal response?

In one study, males and females viewed sexually explicit materials—heterosexual, homosexual, and nonhuman. Females showed strong genital arousal to all human materials and even (although lesser) to nonhuman materials. Male genital response was strong to preferred human stimuli (homo- or heterosexual) and weak or nonexistent for nonpreferred human stimuli and nonhuman stimuli. However, patterns of psychological arousal were similar for both genders; they reported high arousal only by specific, preferred human stimuli. One explanation from an evolutionary perspective is that it is
adaptive for males to read specific sexual cues indicating mating opportunities, whereas for females, who are at greater risk of sexual assault, it is adaptive to react to any sign of sexual threat. Another study reports that females are more capable of separating sexual mind and body, and physical arousal hardly becomes psychological—that is, only in the presence of other important cues. However, there are studies contradicting these registered differences in genital and psychological arousal.
