Distinguish between reminiscence groups and the life review? What is the purpose of each?
What will be an ideal response?
Reminiscence groups are intended to stimulate positive memories that lead to positive feelings. It is not intended to resolve lifelong conflicts. It may be beneficial to people with depression, self-esteem or socialization issues. It is less effective with those who have limited concentration, cognitive impairment (though can be useful for people with mild cognitive impairment) or mental illness and disruptive behavior. The purpose of the life review is to confront negative memories from various parts of life and with the skill of a social worker or counsellor reframe them or embrace them with the addition of positive memories. Life review may help those who are burdened by guilt or disappointments from the past; those who are facing widowhood or significant health issues, and question the purpose they served in life. The life review can be best used with people who are trying to find meaning and purpose in their lives, are verbal and can tolerate emotion. Life review may not be the best choice for all older adults since some aspects of life review can trigger late life depression.
