What is meant by the "coupling of chemical reactions"? Provide two relevant biological examples to help explain the

importance of this process to living organisms. What will be an ideal response?

In chemical coupling, an exergonic reaction provides the energy to drive an endergonic
reaction. In particular, catabolic reactions such as cellular respiration provide the energy to
power anabolic reactions such as the synthesis of proteins and other macromolecules.

According to William Hamilton's formulation of kin selection, in which scenario would you have the greatest fitness? Use Figure 45.17 in your text for help

A. Sacrificing yourself for the benefit of one child. B. Sacrificing yourself for the benefit of one sibling. C. Sacrificing yourself for the benefit of two nieces and/or nephews. D. Sacrificing yourself for the benefit of three nieces and/or nephews. E. Sacrificing yourself for the benefit of one child has the same fitness benefit as sacrificing yourself for the benefit of one sibling and for the benefit of two nieces and/or nephews, and is the best choice.

Detergents are best able to dissolve oil from fabric or dishes during washing because

A) the positively charged end is associated with water molecules, while the negatively charged end interacts with the oil droplet. B) the negatively charged end is associated with water molecules, while the positively charged end interacts with the oil droplet. C) the nonpolar end is associated with water molecules, while the charged end interacts with the oil droplet. D) the charged end is associated with water molecules, while the nonpolar end interacts with the oil droplet. E) detergents are nonpolar, they increase the size of the oil droplet, allowing the water to be more effective at removing the oil.
