List four major types of human brain scanning techniques and provide one advantage and one disadvantage of each.
What will be an ideal response?
Computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) are different brain scanning techniques. CT scans have the advantage of being a fast way to obtain a detailed 3-dimensional image of the brain, but the disadvantage is that they do not show brain activity, just static images. MRI is similar to CT in that it has good temporal and fairly good spatial resolution, but it also takes only static images of the brain. Diffusion tensor imaging, a variant of MRI, can provide images of fibers of passage in the brain. PET and fMRI have the advantages of showing brain change during an activity and having good spatial resolution. However, PET has the disadvantage of needing a radioactive dye to be injected into users, which makes for poor temporal resolution of this technique. fMRI can produce detailed images of the changing brain with good temporal resolution, but this technique is expensive.
