A statement outlining the expected use of computers and the network. For example, in a college, the expected use of computers would involve performing Internet research, emailing or uploading assignments, working on assignments (writing code for a programming class, writing an essay for an English class, watching an instructional video), or using an installed and approved software application.
A code of conduct describing the prohibited behaviors deemed unacceptable. These may include sharing or stealing passwords, downloading or watching inappropriate content, running a file server, connecting a laptop to the institutions network, making threats via email or instant message, installing software or releasing a worm, or changing the system configuration or other software settings.
A description of the consequences for violating the code of conduct. Perhaps the first violation involves issuing a warning to the user. The second violation may cause the user to lose privileges for a week or other length of time. The third violation may cause the user to lose their computer account permanently, or perhaps be fired from their job. Certain violations may result in immediate dismissal depending on their severity.
