Discuss how most of the energy sources on earth originally came from the sun.

What will be an ideal response?

Fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, coal) are all forms of sun energy that was originally absorbed by living things and then transformed over millions of years into fuels that can be burned (oxidized) to release their stored sun energy as heat. Hydro-power is also sun energy that causes evaporation of surface water and generates weather systems in the atmosphere. Evaporation and weather systems both use sun energy to lift water from the oceans and deposit it as rain or snow in higher elevations on land. As this water flows down again to the sea, its movement provides energy to drive turbines that produce much of our electric power
