Explain how and why advances in LGBTQ rights have not been equally realized across members of the LGBTQ community.
What will be an ideal response?
1. Social class standing, and in turn, the ability (or not) to leave an isolated, conservative community for a more accepting one can dramatically impact an LGBTQ person’s quality of life. (e.g., providing access to a community of friends and potential partners or workplaces with LGBTQ-friendly environments and policies).
2. LGBTQ individuals who are gender non-conforming or transgender experience higher rates of violent victimization, assault, harassment, and other negative outcomes as a result of pushing the boundaries of society’s norms around sex and gender.
3. Transgender people are particularly vulnerable to economic hardship and employment discrimination.
4. Outcomes seem to be worst for individuals who present as more masculine or feminine than a person of their gender would be expected to be.
