Interactions between the police and children who are 10 or younger are for the most part positive. The middle childhood period, the period from about 7 to 11 years of age, builds on the previous year. The primary people in children's lives are in the home, neighborhood, and school. At this time if children have been encouraged to be imaginative and curious, they can learn good work habits. For many children, the police can be a role model, a powerful authority figure and an adult friend. Relations between police officers and children are important. Much of the potentially negative interaction between young people and the police occur between the ages of 11 and 17 because this is the period during which most delinquency and incorrigibility take place. This is a period of transition from childhood to adulthood, from dependence to independence. It is a period of rapid change. Relationships with family members may become more distant and relationships with peers become closer. However, there are a number of programs designed to prevent juveniles from committing crimes such as drug and alcoholism diversion projects. Nevertheless, there will be numerous challenges for the police with these young individuals such as trying to help them grown into mature and responsible adults.
