Explain what this statement means: When applying consequences, certainty is more important than severity
What will be an ideal response?
It is most important that students understand that there will be consequences when rules are broken, not that the consequences will be severe, which may cause resentment in a student. Also, it may be difficult to follow through on severe or long-lasting consequences. Mild but certain consequences communicate, "I cannot tolerate that sort of behavior, but I care about you and want you to rejoin the class when you are ready."
