Constipation occurs when defecation is delayed, and results in dry, hard feces. Many causes include resisting the urge to defecate, decreased large intestine motility, hormonal changes, and emotions. Can cause severe pain, headache, nausea. Diarrhea is the frequent defecation of watery fecal matter. Primary cause is greater small intestinal motility due to infection, inflammation; emotions can also cause problem. Consequences include dehydration and metabolic acidosis due to loss of bicarbonate.
