Trees based on a single homologous gene reflect the evolutionary history of that gene, but its pattern of divergence may not exactly match that of the species carrying that gene. Single-gene phylogenies are gene trees, while several such genes can be collectively analyzed to infer a more accurate picture of species-level phylogeny, or species tree.
