Schema theory describes how people store, access, and retrieve information in their minds to make sense of what they experience; it is an attempt to understand our flexible and growing mental frameworks. In the context of reading, this means that readers hold information in their minds that they use to understand words and ideas in texts. At times, even though readers have the appropriate schema, the text does not provide enough clues for them to access that information. Other times, they encounter text that includes information not already in their experience. Understanding is difficult until the reader's limited schema is expanded. Occasionally, readers try to impose a schema that does not fit a text, creating a mismatch.
