- Competent listeners work at listening. They are prepared to listen and know what they wish to gain from their listening experiences. Competent listeners also engage in appropriate listening behaviors. They realize that being a good listener is an active and complex process. They know they must pay attention. They do not interrupt others, they look at the speaker, they listen to ideas, and they concentrate on what is being said.
