Discuss the rationale behind establishing three perimeters

What will be an ideal response?

To properly protect the crime scene, establishing three perimeters is recommended. The outer perimeter is established to keep the public out and the scene safe. A media station may be set up just outside this perimeter. The middle perimeter is established outside the actual crime scene. This allows a variety of official personnel to get close to the scene without endangering the evidence. The inner perimeter is established around the actual crime scene; only select personnel are allowed into the inner perimeter, crime scene technicians, the lead investigator, and the medical examiner. Possible entry and exit routes for the perpetrator should also be protected. Entrances and exits into the scene must be kept to a minimum and preferably should all follow the same route. This will aid in controlling both who access to the scene and in keeping unauthorized people out. The initial perimeter established by the first responder should be as large as possible to err on the side of caution and to preserve any outlying evidence, such as tire tracks and shoe impressions.
