Explain the relationship between carrying capacity and limiting factor in regard to population growth. Relate this to

the S-shaped logistic growth curve. What will be an ideal response?

ANSWER: A low-density population grows slowly at first but then grows more rapidly. At some point
the carrying capacity is reached and the curve levels off. This is the S-shaped logistic curve.
The flattening out of the curve is when the population reaches its carrying capacity or the
number of individuals that can be sustained for an ongoing basis. If a water shortage
occurred, the carrying capacity might drop as individuals die off and a new carrying capacity
would be established. In this case water is a limiting factor.
