SyncOne Inc. has decided to use management by objectives (MBO) as its performance appraisal method. Discuss the steps involved in executing MBO. How will the employees at SyncOne benefit by being a part of their organization's MBO?
What will be an ideal response?
Management by objectives (MBO) is generally used with managerial employees. The MBO process establishes a clearly defined statement of objectives for the work to be performed by an employee. A plan is developed indicating how objectives are to be achieved. The employee is allowed to implement the plan. The degree of conformity with objectives is measured. Corrective action is taken when indicated. New objectives for the future are established.
MBO encourages employees to participate in setting their own goals and lets them know how they will be evaluated and bases performance appraisal on progression toward goals. Employee is motivated to achieve the goals because of the active participation in setting the goals. Morale and communications should be improved between managers and employees.
