Explain what a caisson is and describe the two types of caissons that are used.

What will be an ideal response?

A caisson is a watertight shell in which construction work is carried out below water level. Caissons may be open or pneumatic. The top of the open caisson is exposed to the weather, and work is performed under normal atmospheric pressure. Pneumatic caissons are air- and watertight. They are open on the bottom so soil excavation can be accomplished.
