The absence of a complete ventricular septum allows turtles to reduce the blood flow to the lungs by shunting blood from the right (pulmonary) circuit to the left (systemic) circuit. When and why would a right-to-left blood shunt be advantageous?
What will be an ideal response?
Forcing blood through capillaries requires energy, and the energy used to force blood through the pulmonary capillaries is wasted when a turtle is not breathing. Aquatic turtles do not use pulmonary respiration when they are underwater, and neither aquatic nor terrestrial turtles are able to breathe when they have withdrawn their legs and head into the shell. These are situations in which the right-to-left shunt of blood in the heart would save energy.
