Figure 24.5
According to environmental scientist Norman Myers, "If a nation's environmental foundations are degraded or depleted, its economy may well decline, its social fabric deteriorates, and its political structure become destabilized as growing numbers of people seek to sustain themselves from declining resource stocks. Explain how this is true with respect to Haiti.
What will be an ideal response?
Haiti has suffered from a severe loss of environmental and economic security because of a combination of rapid population growth, deforestation, severe soil erosion, rampant poverty, and political disruption. People have stripped away most of the country's trees and other vegetation for use as firewood. Major loss of vegetation has led to severe soil erosion. Taken together, these factors along with a severe earthquake in 2010 have greatly reduced food production and led to greater poverty, malnutrition, and social unrest.
