A prison warden coordinates activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of subordinate employees. In addition, the warden evaluates and verifies employees’ performance and coordinates their work activities. The warden identifies staff development and training needs, maintains records, prepares reports, and composes work-related correspondences. The warden supervises and controls the inside movement of prisoners, implements polices and develops procedures in areas of responsibility, and supervises the classification of new inmates. The warden also reviews written communications from prisoners, develops and implements procedures for educational and treatment programs, represents the facility to the Department of Corrections central office, reviews job résumés, prepares and conducts hiring interviews and plans, and coordinates and supervises leisure activities of prisoners. Lastly, wardens must be in touch with the inmate population.
