The most employable spa professionals are those who have training in more than one modality, and practitioners are expected to represent all their training and experience accurately. One of the benefits of working in a spa is that practitioners usually receive training in all the treatments offered. It is expected that practitioners participate in this training even if they have completed a program of study at a school.
Practitioners are expected to be punctual and have a professional appearance. This most likely involves

Practitioners may also be expected to work before and after hours of operation to help maintain the treatment rooms. The length of shifts varies with each spa. Some spas require practitioners to be on site for their entire shift; some only require practitioners to come in for their booked treatments but be available to come in with short notice. Customer service is the number one priority of spas. To meet the needs of clients, spa employees may be expected to work more often than just their regular shifts. For example, they may have regular shifts during the week plus be on call other days.
Spa practitioners are also expected to work with their scheduled appointments; refusing to work with a particular client is generally not acceptable. Practitioners need to set aside personal feelings and be professional. If, however, there is safety issue, such as an abusive or inebriated client, practitioners do have the right to decline the treatment. Their supervisors should provide support and step in to manage uncomfortable and dangerous situations.
