Discuss the distribution of Sunni and Shi'ite Islam across the region. Where are there currently conflicts between the two sects?
What will be an ideal response?
Sunni Islam is the majority branch of Islam, comprising more than 85% of the regional population. The vast
majority of North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and Turkey adheres to Sunni Islam. Shi'ite Islam is found in Iran (the only nation where Shi'ites vastly outnumber Sunnis), the southern half of Iraq, and in pockets of Syria, Lebanon and Yemen. Sectarian conflicts tend to arise in nations where there are large numbers of both Sunni and Shi'ite, most notably within Iraq, Yemen and Syria, where currently a civil war rages between a Shi'ite minority government and a Sunni majority population.
