During the 1940s and 1950s, metropolitan areas peaked in population. What were reasons for this? These urban areas were comprised of large black populations surrounded by white suburbs. What factors created this dichotomy? Do you feel this dichotomy

still exist today? Why or why not?

What will be an ideal response?

Urban population peaked due to factory and other work that centered in urban areas, as well as wartime needs. This would have declined as suburbs grew and employment transitioned to the technological base. The answer for the differences in demographics should include factors such as job availability, migration from the South and poverty. These demographic still largely exist today. The reason include earlier factors, though employment ability has declined. Some changes exist as well due to the increasing mobility of the population.
